ANZ Graduate Program Assessment: Games, Digital Interview & Personality Questionnaire
ANZ's graduate process is a short application, then a digital interview and game-based assessment on one platform, then a personality questionnaire and a final interview. Candidates report the platform is HireVue (ANZ used pymetrics until 2024). The stages, the dates of recent rounds and how to practise.

TL;DR: ANZ's graduate recruitment has five steps: a short online application, a digital interview and game-based assessment ("a bunch of games that help us get to know you better"), a personality questionnaire, interview preparation with past graduates, and a final interview. ANZ doesn't name its assessment vendor. Candidates in the last two rounds say the video interview and games run on HireVue: about six recorded questions plus short games, including a maths game. ANZ's graduate team has said it doesn't run assessment centres. The final stage is a behavioural interview with two ANZ leaders. To prepare, practise quick arithmetic and visual puzzles for a few days, prepare four or five examples for the video, and answer the personality questionnaire honestly.
The five stages are listed on ANZ's Graduate Program page. Dates and game details come from ANZ's graduate team and candidates on the Whirlpool forums. Your invitation is the final word.
Which assessment company does ANZ use?
ANZ hasn't said publicly, so treat this as reported rather than confirmed:
- 2025 intake (applied 2024): ANZ's graduate team listed a "Pymetrics game-based assessment (16 games that can take about 30 minutes to complete)" and a separate pre-recorded video interview (Whirlpool, 2024).
- 2026 intake (applied 2025): the team described a "Digital recorded video interview & gamified assessment (all in same platform)" (Whirlpool, 2025). Candidates wrote "Did hirevue yesterday" and mentioned "the feedback I got from hirevue".
- 2027 intake (applied 2026): candidates again described one sitting with the video interview and games. Their feedback reports grouped scores under cognitive ability (reasoning, visuospatial, numerical, mental agility), Big Five personality and interview competencies. One candidate described the report as coming from HireVue (Whirlpool, 2026).
So many prep sites that still describe ANZ's games as pymetrics are probably out of date. If your invitation comes from pymetrics, see our pymetrics games guide.
What are the stages and the timeline?
- Online application. ANZ calls it "really short". Its listings say no CV is needed, and candidates in 2026 said a CV and cover letter were optional.
- Digital interview and games. The invitation usually arrives within a day or a few days of applying. Candidates in 2024 reported a 72-hour window, and ANZ's team said you can email it if you need an extension.
- Personality questionnaire. This comes as a separate invitation, often within hours or a day or two of finishing the games. Some candidates say ANZ reused their result from an earlier year. Several 2027 applicants got a feedback report after the first stage.
- Review after applications close. ANZ waits until the round closes and everyone has finished their assessments. An automated reply quoted by a 2026 candidate said everyone should hear back within three weeks of the closing date.
- Interview preparation and final interview. ANZ's page calls the last step a "face to face interview". In 2025, the graduate team explained it is held on Microsoft Teams with two ANZ leaders: a behavioural interview with no group activity or technical task, the same for all streams. 2026 candidates also described a Teams panel interview.
Recent dates. For the 2027 Australian program, ANZ's listings said applications closed on 11 May 2026. Candidates reported interview invitations from late May into mid-June, with Risk interviews in the second week of June. The rounds before ran 12 March–20 April 2025 and 18 March–22 April 2024. Candidates reported a later round for Institutional Banking and Technology opening around 1 September 2026, with outcomes in October. ANZ is now taking expressions of interest for the 2028 Australian program and says the next round opens early in the new year.
Eligibility. You must be an Australian or New Zealand citizen, or a permanent resident of the program country, and in your final year of a bachelor's degree or higher, or have graduated in the last three years. The program lasts 18 or 24 months, and ANZ says there's a role for you once you finish it. Places vary by stream; one 2026 candidate was told Risk had only three.
What are the games like?
ANZ only calls them "a bunch of games". Candidates' descriptions are short:
- A maths game. A 2025 candidate listed "6 questions for video interviews, maths test and some other tests". On HireVue, the numerical game candidates usually report is Numerosity: pick the numbers that hit a target, against a timer.
- Visual and reasoning games. Feedback reports scored "visuospatial ability" and "reasoning ability". That points to shape and puzzle games such as HireVue's Shapedance, though ANZ candidates haven't named them.
- A preference task. The same 2025 candidate said the last item was "picking the preferred photo out of the photos". That's a work-style measure with no right answer.
The cognitive games adapt as you play: you move up a level when you get things right. A harder level usually means you're doing well.
How should I practise?
- Numbers: Numerosity for the target-number format and mental math for speed. See our Numerosity guide.
- Visual reasoning: Shapedance mental rotation trains you to compare shapes quickly. See our Shapedance guide.
- The wider set: HireVue games explained covers every game candidates report, and the HireVue assessment timeline explains what happens after you submit.
Run each game once, then drill your weakest for 10–15 minutes a day. For the video, prepare examples that show curiosity, teamwork and how you adapt to new people and situations, which are the qualities ANZ's listings emphasise. Answer using STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result). Answer the personality questionnaire consistently and as yourself. A 2025 candidate thought it weighed heavily in who reached the final stage, but ANZ hasn't said so.
FAQ
Does ANZ still use pymetrics? Not according to recent candidates. ANZ named pymetrics for the 2025 intake. Since 2025, its games have been described as part of the same platform as the video interview, which candidates call HireVue.
Is there an assessment centre? ANZ's graduate team said in 2025 that it doesn't run assessment centres. The final stage is an interview with two leaders.
Do I need a CV? ANZ says no. In 2026, uploading one was optional.
When will I hear back? Usually only after applications close. ANZ's automated reply said within about three weeks of the closing date.
When do applications open for 2028? ANZ says early in the new year (2027). Recent Australian rounds opened in March. Register your interest so you're notified.
