What is the lock (security) game practice?

Arctic Shores' Security task — the one candidates call the lock game — is a safe with four locks, each with a five-digit code. The digits sit still on a ring while a shaded sector sweeps round it; press Stop while the shade covers the highlighted digit to enter it. The shade narrows and speeds up as you go, and one miss sends you back to the very first digit. You can leave with Exit whenever you like. Arctic Shores describes it as reading processing speed, perseverance and how you respond to setbacks.

How this practice version works. Built from candidates' recordings of the real task: four locks of five digits, the shade three digits wide on the first lock, two on the second and one after that, steady at first, then faster and swinging back and forth. A miss restarts the safe with the same codes. Press Space (or tap Stop). Your score is your timing: how many milliseconds the shade's centre was from the digit's centre when you pressed, as a median — lower is better, and it needs at least ten presses. How far you got, how many restarts and when you left are shown but not scored: there is no right amount, and the real task reads it as a trait.

What helps: press as the shade's centre reaches the digit, not as its edge does — and a touch early, because your finger needs time too. After a restart, take a breath; the first lock is the easy one.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Arctic Shores lock game?

It is the Security task: a safe of four locks with five-digit codes. A shaded sector sweeps round a ring of digits and you press Stop while it covers the highlighted digit. The shade narrows and speeds up, one miss sends you back to the first digit of the first lock, and you can leave with Exit at any time.

Should I keep trying or exit?

There is no right answer, and this version does not score it. Arctic Shores describes the task as reading perseverance and how you respond to setbacks, which are traits rather than skills; candidates who have done it report it is very hard to finish. Play the way you would naturally rather than performing a profile.

Are these the real Arctic Shores locks?

No. The structure follows candidates' recordings of the real task — four locks of five digits, a narrowing shade, a restart on every miss, an Exit button — but the codes, speeds and scoring here are our own; Arctic Shores does not publish them, and GamePrep has no access to them.

How do I stop the shade on the right number?

Aim for the shade's centre, not its edge, and press slightly before it arrives. Your reaction takes time, and on the later locks the shade is one digit wide and fast, so anticipating it beats reacting to it.
