What is the digit span memory test practice?
The digit span test is one of the most common working-memory games in HireVue-style game-based assessments. A sequence of digits flashes on screen one digit at a time, and you have to type it back from memory. Every time you answer correctly the sequence gets one digit longer, so the test quickly finds the limit of your short-term memory — your "digit span".
In real recruitment assessments this game usually runs for a few minutes and your result is compared against other candidates for the same role. Most adults manage a span of 5–8 digits; scores above 8 are considered excellent.
Tips that actually help: group digits into chunks of 2–3 (like a phone number), say them in your head in rhythm, and don't panic after one mistake — you get a second attempt at the same length. Regular practice noticeably improves chunking speed, which is exactly what this free trainer is for.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good digit span score?
Most adults recall 5 to 8 digits. A span of 7 or more puts you in the top quarter of test takers, and 9+ is an excellent result in recruitment assessments.
Is this the same digit span test used by HireVue?
It follows the same classic forward digit span mechanic used in HireVue-style game-based assessments: sequences get longer after each correct answer and the game ends after two mistakes at the same length. It is an independent practice tool, not the official test.
Can I improve my digit span with practice?
Yes. Chunking digits into groups of two or three, rehearsing them rhythmically, and practising regularly can add one or two digits to your span within a few weeks.
How is my score calculated?
Your score is the longest sequence you recalled correctly (max span). We also show your accuracy across all rounds and a percentile based on typical adult performance norms.
