What is the balloon game practice?

The balloon game appears in pymetrics (Harver) and Arctic Shores assessments. Each pump adds $0.05 to the balloon; exchange it to bank the money, or keep pumping and risk it popping, which loses that balloon's money. In Arctic Shores' version, as its own footage shows, there are 45 balloons, and they come in different shapes — round, wide, tall — that do not all hold the same amount of air.

What the real assessment reads. In pymetrics and Arctic Shores this is a behavioural task: your pattern of pumps is read as a risk profile — how bold you are, whether you adjust after a pop, whether you stay consistent. There is no correct number of pumps and no profile that "wins". Trying to perform caution or boldness you do not have tends to read as inconsistency. Play the way you would actually play.

What this practice version scores. Money banked across 45 balloons — Inflate with Space, Exchange with Enter, as in the real task. Each shape bursts within its own range, reshuffled every session, so the players who bank the most are the ones who notice which shapes are safe to push and which are not. That learning is the part of the task that is a skill, and it is what the percentile here measures. The value of playing it once before the real thing is simply that the format stops being new.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a right strategy for the balloon game?

Not in the real assessment. pymetrics and Arctic Shores read your pumps as a risk profile, and no profile is correct. In this practice version the score is money banked, which rewards noticing that some balloon shapes burst much earlier than others.

Can you practise the balloon game?

You cannot practise your risk appetite, and you should not try to fake one. What practice does change is familiarity: seeing the inflate-and-exchange format once means it is not new on the day, and you can play it the way you naturally would.

Do the balloon shapes matter?

In Arctic Shores' version, candidates describe three shapes that pop at different rates, and its own footage shows round and wide balloons. In this practice version each shape has its own burst range, reshuffled every session; learning which holds more air is what separates a high score from a low one.

What happens when a balloon pops?

You lose the money in that balloon, not the money you have already banked. The next balloon starts from zero.
