What is the balance (scales) game practice?

Arctic Shores' Balance task, as candidates describe it, is a set of scales holding shapes with hidden weights. A few scales are shown already balanced; from them you work out what to put on the empty pan of the last scale so that it balances too. It is a numerical and logical reasoning task with right answers, and it adapts: solve one and the next is harder, miss one and it gets easier.

How this practice version works. Ten puzzles, a minute each. Read the balanced scales, then build the empty pan from the tray of shapes — any combination that weighs the same is right, except copying the full pan across. Difficulty runs from two shapes and one scale up to four shapes and four scales where you have to combine them — sometimes with the same shape on both sides, to cancel out. Your score is the sum of the levels you solved, so harder puzzles count for more.

What helps: pick the lightest shape as your unit and rewrite every other shape in it. "A triangle balances two circles" makes a triangle 2; then "a square balances a triangle and a circle" makes the square 3. If a ratio comes out as a half — two triangles balance three circles — use half a circle as the unit instead. Once everything is in units, the last scale is addition.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Arctic Shores balance game?

Candidates describe a task with scales holding shapes of hidden weight: some scales are shown balanced, and you work out which shapes balance the last one. About ten puzzles with roughly a minute each, getting harder as you get them right.

Is there more than one right answer?

Here, yes: any combination from the tray that weighs the same as the full pan is right, except a copy of the full pan itself. Arctic Shores does not publish how its version marks answers.

Are these the real Arctic Shores puzzles?

No. This is an independent practice version of the task type candidates describe; Arctic Shores does not publish its puzzles, rules or scoring, and GamePrep has no access to them.

What is the fastest way to solve a balance puzzle?

Turn every shape into a number of the lightest shape. Work through the balanced scales one at a time, substituting what you already know, then add up the full pan and build the same total from the tray.
