Before you recommend GamePrep to students

Advisers, society committees and editors check the same few things before they link a resource: who is behind it, whether it is really free, whether it sells anything it should not, and how the numbers are made. This page answers those in order.

What this is

GamePrep is 17 playable browser clones of the task types used in game-based hiring assessments: digit span, numerosity, balloon risk, Stroop, flanker, mental arithmetic and the rest of the family that HireVue, pymetrics/Harver, Arctic Shores and cut-e/Aon build their assessments from. A student plays a game, the run is scored on our server, and they see a percentile within seconds. No account is needed to play, and no card is ever asked for to play.

The point is familiarity. Most candidates who do badly on these assessments are not short of ability; they are meeting an unfamiliar format under time pressure for the first time. Having played the format once removes that, which is the largest single gain available before a real assessment.

What it is not

  • Not the vendors' games. These are independent clones of the same task types. We have no access to any vendor's item banks, norms or scoring, and no relationship with any of them.
  • Not leaked content. There are no answers to memorise here and nothing that would help a student misrepresent themselves. Trait games in particular cannot be gamed, and we say so on every page that covers one.
  • Not a promise. No employer publishes its pass mark, so nothing here claims a student will pass a specific assessment. We say what is trainable and what is not.

GamePrep is independent and not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to HireVue, pymetrics, Harver, Arctic Shores, Aon, cut-e, SHL, Cappfinity or any employer named on the site.

How scoring works

Every run is scored server-side against a fixed norm table for that game, so the same performance always gives the same percentile, for everyone. The tables do not drift as more people play, which is what makes a rising score a real improvement rather than a moving comparison group. The full method is on the scoring methodology page, and what people actually score publishes the distribution of first attempts per game with the sample size beside every row.

What students pay for, and what is never gated

Every game and every score is free, without an account, indefinitely. A free account additionally saves recent scores. The paid tier sells the full score history and the per-employer readiness report, which names a student's weakest game for a given employer's assessment and lays out a day-by-day plan. Prices are on the pricing page. Nothing a student needs in order to practise sits behind it.

Pages worth linking

  • Which employers use which assessment — a maintained map from employer to assessment provider, with a confidence rating and a source for every entry. The page most advisers ask for first.
  • Employer guides — one page per employer: which games appear, what they measure, which of ours to practise.
  • Guides — the individual game types explained, and the honest answers to "can you fail it" and "what is a good score".
  • Score benchmarks — where a student's first attempt sits against everyone else's, per game.
